Arriving at the Met with more than the entry rules allow means sorting your bag before you reach the doors, or finding a spot nearby once you've seen the galleries.

The main subway approach is the 4, 5, or 6 train to 86th Street, and step-free entries are available on Fifth Avenue and through the parking garage. Small backpacks are allowed but must be carried in hand or worn on your front. Large bags and luggage cannot be left at the museum’s coat check. There are no general public self-service lockers inside The Met. The only lockers available are reserved for researchers using the Thomas J. Watson Library, not for general visitors. Getting to the museum with your bags

The easiest subway route is the 4, 5, or 6 train to 86th Street, then a walk of about 10 minutes west to the museum. From the Q line's 86th Street station the walk is a bit longer at 0.8 miles, taking 15 to 20 minutes, so a heavy bag makes that feel considerably longer. If you need step-free access, the entrances at Fifth Avenue and 81st Street and through the parking garage at Fifth Avenue and 80th Street are the ones to aim for.

Planning your visit

The Met is open Sunday through Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am to 5 pm, with later hours on Friday and Saturday until 9 pm, and it is closed on Wednesdays. Adult general admission costs $30, seniors pay $22, and students pay $17, while children 12 and under and members get in free.
