Art museums with strict baggage rules

The Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side, home to over 5,000 years of art, does not accept large bags or luggage in the building at all, even at its coat check. The Whitney Museum of American Art likewise prohibits luggage of any size or type, though it does offer a complimentary coat check on Floor -1 for other bags and backpacks.

The Museum of Modern Art takes the strictest line of the three: no luggage of any size or type and nothing larger than 11 by 17 by 5 inches is allowed. Arrive at any of these with only a small crossbody bag or tote, and plan to leave everything else somewhere before you queue.

At One World Observatory, luggage is not allowed and there are no lockers or storage facilities for personal items on site.

Performance venues and their coat checks

Carnegie Hall offers a coat check for $2 per item for performances in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage and Zankel Hall, though larger items must be checked before seating, and the service is not available for Weill Recital Hall performances. Markets, transit, and getting around with luggage

Chelsea Market at 75 Ninth Avenue opens daily from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, while Essex Market on the Lower East Side is open Monday through Wednesday from 8am to 8pm, Thursday through Saturday until 9pm, and Sunday from 10am to 6pm. Gansevoort Liberty Market at 4 World Trade Center has shorter hours—Monday through Saturday 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Sunday until 6:00 PM. Go light or arrange storage first at the markets, since none of them offer luggage services.
