Getting around with bags

The AirTrain JFK links every terminal to public transport, parking, the hotel shuttle area and the rental car centre, and moves passengers between terminals in under 10 minutes. On the subway itself, wheeled carts larger than 30 inches are banned, so pack with that in mind. If you are bringing a suitcase, look for an AutoGate at subway stations, which lets customers with large items such as a suitcase or bike enter the station. Paratransit riders face tighter limits of two bags totalling 40 pounds or less.

Sights and attractions: bag rules

One Times Square turns away suitcases, wheeled duffels, carry-ons, coolers and packages, and has no coat check to fall back on. The Metropolitan Museum of Art also bars large bags and luggage from the building entirely, including its coat check. Yankee Stadium allows only one soft-sided bag up to 16x16x8 inches plus a small personal item, with no storage for anything refused at the gate.

Citi Field follows a similar 16x16x8-inch limit but bans backpacks outright unless they are completely clear, and has no bag-check facility inside. At MetLife Stadium, the clear-bag policy is stricter — non-clear bags can be no larger than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches — though a bag-check facility sits outside each open gate, costing $5 for non-NFL events and free for NFL events.

Madison Square Garden sits directly above Pennsylvania Station and is reached by the 1, 2, 3, A, C and E subway lines at 34th Street/Penn Station, so if you arrive by train, Amtrak's desk inside Moynihan Train Hall is the nearest station storage option. The Museum of Modern Art prohibits any luggage and anything larger than 11x17x5 inches.

At the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, bags over 19x17x8 inches are refused outright, and large bags or items deemed too large or dangerous must be left in the Museum's coat rooms. The Empire State Building prohibits suitcases and carry-ons and has no on-site storage at all. Broadway theatres likewise offer no luggage storage and won't admit bags that cannot fit comfortably at a seat.

In Chinatown, there is no official luggage storage facility provided by the Chinatown Partnership.
