Times Square itself: bag rules and access

Times Square is easy to walk around but strict about where bags can actually go, so if you're hauling a suitcase through Midtown, plan ahead. The plaza itself is open to everyone at all hours, so crossing through with a small day bag is fine. The big exception is New Year's Eve: suitcases and large bags are banned outright at the outdoor celebration, and every bag gets searched before entry.

One Times Square goes further, turning away suitcases, trunks, wheeled duffel bags, and even carry-on bags. The Palladium Times Square venue also searches all bags on the way in.

Getting to Times Square with luggage

The Times Square–42nd Street station complex sits directly under the plaza at 42nd Street, Seventh Avenue, and Broadway, so you can ride the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, or S train straight into the heart of things. That makes the station an easy place to reach, but if you're carrying a suitcase it's worth sorting out where your bags will go before you head up to the plaza. Alternatively, the 50th Street station at Broadway is served by the 1, 2, and 3 lines.

Nearby attractions: storage and bag rules

Broadway theatres are the closest draw, but none of them will hold your luggage, and large bags that can't fit at your seat are refused at the door. The Al Hirschfeld Theatre will check a coat for $3, though that won't help with a suitcase.

A few blocks down, the Empire State Building has no lockers on-site and prohibits suitcases, carry-ons, and oversized packages entirely — so don't plan on sightseeing with a bag in tow. The Museum of Modern Art is stricter still: no luggage of any size, and nothing over 11 by 17 by 5 inches.

Madison Square Garden sits directly above Penn Station, reachable on the 1, 2, 3, A, C, and E lines at the 34th Street/Penn Station stop. Grand Central Terminal, meanwhile, has no official luggage storage services. Storage is no easier heading downtown: the Chinatown Partnership provides no official facility in that neighbourhood.
