Luggage storage in Vienna: the quick picture

Vienna pulls in travellers for its art, music and imperial palaces, and quite a few of them arrive before a holiday rental is ready or stay on after checkout with hours to spare, so bags need a plan beyond the main rail hubs.

The main rail hubs have lockers, but bag rules at museums and sights vary, so it pays to check before you go. St. Stephen's Cathedral, for example, has no luggage depot, and several museums warn that large items may not fit in their storage.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum has a free cloakroom and lockers for items like backpacks and umbrellas, but it does not offer luggage storage.

At the Leopold Museum, larger suitcases may be refused at the cloakroom depending on capacity, so check before arriving with a big bag. The Belvedere specifies that objects 36 x 22 x 35 cm or larger cannot be taken into exhibition rooms and cannot be stored in the cloakroom.

The mumok explicitly warns that very large items of luggage may not be left in the cloakroom. The Wien Museum requires bags bigger than 20x30 cm to be deposited, and its cloakroom cannot accept large pieces of luggage.

At the Albertina Museum, bags and packages larger than A3 format must be deposited in the cloakroom or lockers, though the cloakroom may refuse oversized objects. Storage at the main stations and airport

Wien Hbf has digital lockers in the basement, sized from small hand-luggage boxes up to 3XL units that take the largest suitcases, and prices are displayed during the booking process. It's also the hub for ÖBB Railjet and Intercity services, with direct trains reaching Vienna Airport in about 15 minutes. At Wien Westbahnhof, locker prices run from €2.00 for a small box to €4.50 for a jumbo one.

Wien Mitte has 30 free hand-luggage lockers in the City Airport Train foyer, though they're only for smaller bags.

Vienna Airport's own storage desk charges €5.00 per day for hand luggage and €10.00 per day for check-in luggage, with safe deposit boxes at €8.00. The REX7 regional express connects the airport to Wien Hbf in about 20 minutes, and the S7 suburban train now runs a shortened route to Sankt Marx, where you'd transfer to trams 18 or 71 or bus 74A for the centre. The City Airport Train is currently a rail replacement coach service between the airport and Wien Mitte, taking 21 minutes, with a one-way ticket at €14.90.

Vienna's attractions and bag rules

St. Stephen's Cathedral sits at the heart of the city and is reached directly from Stephansplatz station. From mid-October 2026, large suitcases and trolleys won't be allowed inside at all, so plan to store them before you arrive. The Hofburg palace complex houses the Sisi Museum, Imperial Apartments, Treasury and Spanish Riding School, and Herrengasse on the U3 line is a 5-minute walk away.

The Sisi Museum itself has no cloakroom or left-luggage facility, so bags need another solution before you go in. Museumsquartier Wien is one of the world's largest art and culture complexes, and its outdoor grounds are open 24 hours a day with free admission. It's served by Museumsquartier and Volkstheater stations on the U2 and U3.

Naschmarkt is the city's largest and most famous market, and entry is free. The Wiener Secession, home to Klimt's Beethoven Frieze, opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closes Mondays, so time a visit around where your bags are stored. Getting around Vienna with luggage

Wiener Linien lets you carry hand luggage free as long as it stays on your lap or in your hand without blocking or disturbing other passengers. Large rucksacks should come off your back before boarding, out of consideration for everyone else. The airport sits outside Vienna's core zone, so you'll need a separate ticket for any airport transfer link. Step-free access is available at all underground stations and most tram and bus stops, which helps with wheeled bags. Wien Erdberg, known for its medieval history and cultural venues like Arena Wien, is also home to the Vienna International Busterminal, Austria's largest bus station and a major hub for long-distance coach travel.
