There’s a particular kind of Viennese afternoon that starts with arriving at Praterstern with a suitcase and no plan for where to put it.

Prater Vienna’s Wurstelprater grounds stay open around the clock with free entry, while the rides, food spots and stadium events nearby each follow their own schedules rather than any single set of hours. Praterstern is the closest stop, about three minutes' walk from the park, with Messe-Prater on the U2 as the other useful approach. The Prater itself has no lockers or official luggage storage facilities inside the park. At Prater DOME, suitcases and any bags or containers larger than A4 size are not allowed inside. For the Wintermarkt at Riesenradplatz, bulky items such as large bags and suitcases are prohibited. Getting to Prater Vienna with luggage

Praterstern is the nearest transport stop, about three minutes' walk from the park entrance. It's served by U-Bahn lines U1 and U2, trams O and 5, bus 80A, and S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S3, S5, S6, S7 and S15. A single Wiener Linien ticket costs €3.20, or €3.00 if you buy it digitally. Messe-Prater on the U2 is a useful alternative for reaching the Wurstelprater side of the park.

Visiting Prater Vienna: hours and practicalities

The Wurstelprater grounds are open to the public 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with free admission. The rides themselves run daily from 15 March to 31 October. Outside this period, from 1 November to 14 March, some attractions open if weather allows, though most close during January.

There are no uniform opening hours across the Wurstelprater, since each ride, attraction and restaurant sets its own schedule.

Rides are paid for individually, typically costing between €3.50 and €15.00 per ride, so keep some cash or a card handy if you plan to try several. The Schweizerhaus, a traditional restaurant in the Prater, is open from 15 March to 31 October. If you're there at odd hours, the Bistro Box at Calafatiplatz stays open 24 hours a day all year.

Nearby: Ernst Happel Stadium and beyond

Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Vienna sits nearby, known as Austria's largest sports arena and the national football stadium, hosting international matches, European finals and major concerts. It opens on an event-based schedule rather than daily, so check what's on before heading over with a bag. The U2 metro line stops right at Stadion station for the ground.

Further out, Landstraße is best known for the Belvedere Palace, the Hundertwasserhaus and the KunstHausWien museum. It has the Rochusmarkt, a traditional Viennese outdoor market offering fresh produce, baked goods, and prepared food.
