Luggage storage and bag rules at the Vatican Museums

Most visitors arrive at the Vatican Museums by Metro Line A, with Ottaviano and Cipro both a short walk from the entrance, but the cloakroom is only accessible once you're past security. Castel Sant'Angelo and St. Peter's Basilica are both close by, yet neither has any cloakroom or luggage storage of its own. Prati, the neighbourhood around the museums, has no official storage facilities either.

Suitcases and large bags are not allowed inside the exhibition spaces and must be deposited in the free cloakroom. The maximum permitted size for bags and containers is 40 x 35 x 15 cm. The cloakroom is located in the entrance hall, accessible after passing through the metal detector, and items are collected at a desk in the exit hall near the Momo helical staircase.

All items stored in the cloakroom must be collected on the same day before the museum's closing time.

Getting to the Vatican Museums with your bags

Metro Line A is the usual route, with Ottaviano and Cipro both within about ten minutes' walk of the entrance. Bus 49 stops right in the square in front of the museums, while buses 32, 81 and 982 stop at Piazza del Risorgimento. Tram 19 ends at Piazza del Risorgimento too, roughly five minutes from the security entrance. If you're arriving with a suitcase, the cloakroom only takes it once you're inside, so you'll be carrying it through the queue and the metal detector first. The Vatican Museums are closed on Sundays, except for the last Sunday of each month, and on several public holidays including January 1 and 6, May 1, and December 25 and 26.

Nearby sights with no storage of their own

Castel Sant'Angelo and St. Peter's Basilica both sit close to the museums, but neither has a cloakroom or luggage storage, so plan around that if you're combining them into one day. Visitors to the Basilica are also advised not to bring large bags. The surrounding Prati neighbourhood has no official storage facilities of its own either.
