Useful information about Roma Tiburtina

Roma Tiburtina began its existence as Portanaccio in 1886 before it was given its current name three years later. In the 1930s, celebrated architect Angelo Mazzoni expanded the Roma Tiburtina station, adding more space and modern details.

Damage from World War II and a tragic escalator accident prompted the city to begin station renovations again in 2004. Unfortunately, a serious fire ignited in July 2011, interrupting much of the railway’s services and delaying the new station's inauguration. Fortunately, the authorities were able to remedy the situation rather efficiently. Just four months later, in November, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano revealed a futuristic-looking and environmentally-friendly Roma Tiburtina, designed by Paolo Desideri.

Today’s spacious 35,000 square-meter station includes office space, VIP lounges, shops, restaurants, and revolving art exhibitions. Additionally, the redesigned 29-platform Roma Tiburtina added 140 high-speed trains running along the Milan to Naples route to its traditional 290 regional trains.

You’ll find bus and taxi services just outside the front entrance that will carry you the short distance to central Rome. Alternatively, you can take the escalator to a bridge that connects with Rome's metro station. Board the Line B trains heading toward Laurentina to reach the Colosseum, the Forum, or central Rome. You’ll also find airport shuttles to either Fiumicino or Ciampino outside Roma Tiburtina.

But before you leave the station, make sure to stop by the Nomentano Atrium and check out the Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour commemorative plaque that tells the story of Italy’s unification.

Things to do near Roma Tiburtina

You’ll find Roma Tiburtina station in the Masala district, not far from the Colosseum, Roman Forum, two sports stadiums, and two major shopping centers. The station is also conveniently located near several lesser-known attractions you can reach on foot, or by a quick bus, metro, or taxi ride.

Palazzo Orizzonte Europa

The contemporary-style Palazzo Orizzonte Europa lies just a minute's walk from Roma Tiburtina. The 12-story headquarters of Italy’s BNL Gruppo BNP is a wonder to look at, with a wall-like glass structure designed by Alfonso Femia and Gianluca with energy efficiency in mind.

Inside, you’ll find a restaurant, gym, health clinic, and kindergarten school. However, the BNL’s art collection is the highlight of a visit to the Palazzo. You’ll find key artworks by Lorenzo Lotto, Spadarino, Giorgio Morandi, Mario Schifano, and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, along with works from the celebrated Fifty Painters of Rome.

Mausoleo di Santa Costanza

Rome’s Mausoleo di Santa Costanza sits just over 1 mile away from Tiburtina station on the grounds of the Basilica of St. Agnes. The mausoleum features underground catacombs that host the remains of many of Rome’s early Christians, one of which is Saint Agnes, who became a martyr at the tender age of 12.

The basilica’s dome faithfully depicts the young martyr in a Byzantine-style gilded mosaic. Solo and guided tours of the basilica and mausoleum are available year-round except during liturgical celebrations.

Basilica di San Lorenzo fuori le Mura

You can reach the Basilica of San Lorenzo by taking a 15-min walk or a short taxi ride from Roma Tiburtina. Visitors can tour the basilica every day from 7-12 am and 4-7 pm except during religious rites.

Bunker di Mussolini a Villa Torlonia

Located only 1.1 miles from the Tiburtina station, the Bunker of Villa Torlonia housed fascist leader Benito Mussolini, his wife, and five children from 1929 through 1943. Highlights of the former ruler’s residence include two air-raid shelters built shortly after Italy entered WWII in 1940.

The dictator began constructing an armored bunker under the Piazza di Casino Nobile in 1942. However, the bunker was left unfinished when authorities arrested Mussolini on the 25th of July, 1943.

Visits to the Bunker of Villa Tortonia have been temporarily suspended due to the pandemic and maintenance needs. You’ll want to check the official homepage to find out if the facility has reopened before planning your trip.

Villa Torlonia Museum

Sitting alongside Mussolini’s bunker, the Villa Torlonia Museum is an architectural wonder with an exciting history. The permanent collection includes masterpieces of sculpture, fresco, and stained glass. The lavish interior of the Casino Nobile and the peaceful 13.2-hectare surrounding park make Villa Tortlonia a must-see if you’re in the neighborhood of Roma Tiburtina.

Museo d’Arte Contemporaneo (MACRO)

Rome’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MACRO) sits within easy walking distance of the Villa Tortonia, making the two attractions an excellent combined trip for art lovers. Located in a former brewery, the museum boasts 4,350 square meters of exhibit space, an auditorium for avant-guarde music, and a landscaped terrace with a panoramic view.

The museum’s permanent collection includes over 1200 artworks dating from the 1950s through the present. Additionally, MACRO hosts temporary exhibits, concerts, and interactive events. The Museo d’Arte Contemporaneo offers free admission every day except Mondays when the museum is closed.
