Getting to the hill and around

Anvers station on Metro Line 2 puts you at the foot of the hill, where you can connect to the funicular up to Sacré-Cœur. If you're approaching from the northern side, Lamarck-Caulaincourt on Line 12 serves that part of the neighbourhood. Once you're up top, the Montmartrobus (Line 40) winds through the upper streets between Pigalle and Jules Joffrin, which helps if you're carrying a bag and don't fancy the climb.

Exploring Montmartre's squares and sights

Place du Tertre is the lively square at the top where artists set up their easels and sell work throughout the day. The Sacré-Cœur Basilica opens daily from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and with ten to eleven million visitors a year, it's wise to arrive without a bulky bag. On the south slope, Place des Abbesses holds the Abbesses metro entrance and the Wall of Love, a mural carrying "I love you" in over 300 languages in the adjacent Square Jehan-Rictus. Further up the hill, Place Dalida features a bust of the singer near Square Suzanne-Buisson, and Place Marcel-Aymé is known for the Le Passe-Muraille sculpture of a man stepping out of a wall. Place Émile-Goudeau, also on the south slope, was home to the Bateau-Lavoir studios where Picasso once worked. Rue Lepic runs as a shopping street with food stalls and cafés, though it gets crowded, so travel light if you can. The Clos Montmartre vineyard at 14, rue des Saules is only accessible on guided tours.

Festivals and events

Montmartre's annual grape harvest festival, the Fête des Vendanges, takes place around the Clos Montmartre vineyard each October. For 2026, the Parcours du Goût event around Sacré-Cœur is scheduled for Friday, October 9, and the streets fill up fast during it.
