    About Amsterdam Centraal Station

Amsterdam Centraal is one of Europe's most iconic railway stations and the beating heart of the Dutch capital. Built between 1881 and 1889, the station was designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers — the same architect behind the Rijksmuseum — and its red-brick neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance façade is instantly recognisable as one of Amsterdam's most photographed landmarks. Every day, more than 250,000 travellers pass through its platforms, making it one of the busiest railway stations on the continent.

The station sits at the northern tip of Amsterdam's historic canal ring, with the city fanning out southward along the grand Damrak boulevard towards Dam Square. Its central position makes it the natural starting point for exploring Amsterdam on foot, by bike, or by boat — the city's famous canal cruises depart from the waterfront directly outside. Trams, metros, ferries to Amsterdam Noord, and international trains to Paris, Brussels, and London all converge here, making Amsterdam Centraal far more than just a local hub.

For visitors, arriving at Centraal is often the first real encounter with Amsterdam's unique atmosphere: the smell of stroopwafels from a nearby kiosk, cyclists streaming past in every direction, and the glittering canal behind the station visible from the exit. It is, in every sense, the gateway to the city.

Is there luggage storage at Amsterdam Centraal Station?

Amsterdam Centraal does have some on-site left-luggage lockers operated by NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen), but they are often full during peak travel periods and are expensive compared to alternatives — typically €6–€8 per day for a single locker. For travellers arriving with multiple bags, oversized luggage, or who simply want a guaranteed space, the NS lockers are frequently not a practical option.

Stasher solves this problem by connecting travellers with a network of vetted hotels, shops, and businesses within walking distance of the station, offering secure, affordable luggage storage that is bookable in advance. Key benefits of using Stasher near Amsterdam Centraal include:

    • Guaranteed availability — book your space online before you arrive, with no risk of finding everything full.

    • Affordable daily rates — Stasher storage near Centraal starts from just €3.49 per bag per day, a fraction of the cost of station lockers.

    • Flexible hours — many Stasher locations are open early until late, or even 24/7, meaning you are not restricted to station opening times.

    • Insurance included — every bag stored through Stasher is guaranteed for up to €1,100.

    • No size surcharges — the flat daily fee covers all bag sizes, including oversized items.

In short, while the NS lockers at Amsterdam Centraal can work for a quick drop-off, Stasher gives you a cheaper, more reliable, and fully bookable alternative right on the doorstep of the station.
