Edinburgh City Guide

The Athens of the North, the home of the Scottish Enlightenment, one of the most high profile festivals in the world, and, of course, Trainspotting. It’s a great mix. But there’s more to this fantastically broody and haunting city than first meets the eye.

The city brims with great things to do, if you only have a short layover or a couple of hours to enjoy it, there’s plenty to keep you busy.

Waverley station is right in the city centre, so a couple of hours wait before your train are no hardship at all. Take one of the atmospheric walking tours in the historic Royal Mile, the city’s beating heat. Start at Holyrood Palace, stop to take a look at St Giles’ Cathedral and its beautiful stained-glass windows, then go all the way up to the Edinburgh Castle to take in the stunning views of the city.

For art fanatics, Edinburgh offers free entry to many galleries, museum and attraction. You can easily fill a couple of hours in Edinburgh without spending a penny! Swing by the Scottish National Gallery and the Royal Scottish Academy, both just a 5-minute walk from Waverley Station. The Scottish National Gallery is home to works from world renowned artists, such as Rembrandt, Botticelli and Picasso, while at the Royal Scottish Academy you can find art collections from the major Scottish artists. The National Museum of Scotland is also worth a visit, don’t forget to venture up to the rooftop terrace on the 7th floor for unexpected breathtaking views of the city.

Edinburgh has often been described as a filmmaker’s dreams, thanks to its stunning architecture, parks and feels. Take a walking tour of some of the world’s most famous filming locations, including the places where scenes from One Day, Trainspotting, The Illusionist and Cloud Atlas were shot.

Looking for something more out there? Climb Arthur’s Seat, the highest point in Holyrood Park, to admire Edinburgh in all its sweeping, panoramic glory, watch the world go by from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, or head underground to the Gilmerton Cove, a series of hand carved passageways that lie beneath the street.  Another option worth considering is the Port of Leigh and Portobello beach, offering romantic vistas of the Water of Leith and some of the best seafood in the country.

Comedy fans, rejoice! You might have missed the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have a laugh during your stay. The Stand Comedy Club is considered the leading light of the Scottish comedy scene and it is often host to some of the UK’s most popular comedians, trying their jokes here for the first time.

After having worked up an appetite shopping up and down Princes Street (yes, it’s the very same from Trainspotting), grab a bite at one of Edinburgh’s many legendary restaurants. Try the hog roast at Oink, the artisan cheese at IJ Mellis, Asian noodles and dumplings at Wee Buddha, and slow food at Café St Honoré.

For those in need of breakfast, possibly before dropping their luggage at their Airbnb, the guys at Pep & Fodder serve a bowl of porridge made the traditional, Scottish way, and they’re just around the corner from the rail station. The Wellington Coffee on George Street is the place to go if you’re a coffee addict, as they serve the award winning Square Mile Roasters brew.

Looking for a drink or two? Sip a cocktail at Bramble, a hard to find bar regularly cropping up on worldwide best bar lists, mix with the locals at Malt Shovel, or be spoilt for choice at the Abbey Bar thanks to their 120+ range of Scotch Whiskies.  If you have a real passion for gin, we recommend you book a tour of the Edinburgh Gin Distillery to learn about how it’s made and taste a sample or two yourself.

Easy to book online at short notice, and a good price. The location was easy to find, very central and the service in the shop was lovely. Luggage was kept safe and it all felt completely secure so I’d definitely use Stasher again.
