Sefton Park: what to expect with bags

A lot of visitors arrive at Sefton Park with more than they can comfortably carry, and In the Park festival events provide no locker or cloakroom facilities.

Sefton Park hosts big events such as Africa Oyé and In the Park, and at In the Park, the bag rules are strict and enforced at the entrance. At In the Park, suitcases and anything larger than an A4 sheet won't get through the entrance, and every bag is searched on the way in.

That means luggage has to be sorted before you reach the queue, not after you've already walked a mile from the station. It's a free, open park the rest of the year, and a focused loop of the Palm House, lake and playground takes roughly two hours.

Getting to the park with luggage

St Michaels, on Merseyrail's Northern Line, is the closest station to the park, and the walk from the platform to the Palm House entrance is about a mile or twenty minutes. That's manageable with a daypack but not much fun with a wheeled case, especially before you've found somewhere to leave it. Taxis can actually pull up right outside the Palm House via Mossley Hill Drive, and a cab from the city centre costs about £10 for a fifteen-minute ride. Buses 80, 80A and 176 from Renshaw Street give access to the park near the Palm House, with an approximate 15-minute walk from the Sefton Park stop.

Day visits and the Palm House

The Palm House is a Victorian glass conservatory situated right inside the park, open Sunday to Wednesday from 10am to 5pm and Thursday until 3pm. It closes on Fridays and Saturdays for private events, so those days are better for the open lawns than the glasshouse itself. Drivers can drop passengers at the gate to the Palm House, which has no kerb. The Palm House entrance is ramped and accessible, and the surrounding paths are flat.
