Madrid's galleries, museums and food are all good reasons to visit. A bag left with a nearby shop means you can enjoy them without hauling your luggage around.

The city's major galleries and museums are a mixed bag when it comes to storing luggage, while its main public squares and parks mostly expect you to carry everything with you. Madrid is the political, economic and cultural centre of Spain. Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport has its own official luggage storage in terminals T1, T2, and T4. Madrid Chamartín station does not have an official luggage storage facility, as the public service was suspended following the pandemic and has not been resumed. Atocha station does not have its own official left-luggage or locker service, as the previous facilities were removed in 2020. There is no official luggage storage facility provided by the transport authority within the Nuevos Ministerios station. Arriving and leaving with luggage

The 24-hour Airport Express bus connects the airport to Cibeles and Atocha for a one-way fare of €5, usually taking 30 to 40 minutes depending on which terminal you land at. From Madrid Chamartín, the Cercanías C1 line reaches the airport's T4 in about 15 minutes, while the same trip from Atocha takes around 29 minutes, so you can time a bag drop around your train. Once you're on city buses, though, suitcases are capped at 55 x 40 x 20 cm except on the airport routes with proper luggage racks, and backpacks must be carried in your hand rather than worn. The metro's advice is similar: keep large bags and backpacks on the floor between your feet, not on your back or front.

Museums and sights: bag rules

The Museo del Prado prohibits entry with suitcases or bulky items larger than 40 x 40 cm, though it does provide a free cloakroom service. At La Galería de las Colecciones Reales, items such as bags and umbrellas over 40 x 40 cm must be left in the cloakrooms or lockers. The Estadio Santiago Bernabéu has no cloakroom at all, so don't count on dropping a bag at the ground.

Matadero Madrid is the same story, with no cloakroom or lockers for luggage or large bags.

Getting around the city with luggage

Madrid Río is lovely for a walk, but the park authority doesn't run any luggage storage or cloakroom in the park, so you'd be carrying everything with you. Puerta del Sol itself is a public square that's open around the clock and free to enter, and the main sights there take about fifteen minutes to see on foot.
