Bukchon Hanok Village: bag rules and the Red Zone

A day wandering the hanok alleys is better with both hands free, and some visitors arrive with more than the entrance rules allow.

The village itself is most easily reached via Anguk Station, where a lift at Exit 2 spares you from hauling luggage up stairs. From there, several bus routes also stop within walking distance, though the subway remains the gentler option with wheeled bags. Nearby, Gyeongbokgung Palace and the Samcheongdong neighbourhood sit within a short walk, and the Bukchon Traditional Culture Centre offers step-free access for visitors who need it. The village is located in Seoul's Jongno District. Its streets are lined with traditional hanok houses that are still lived in by local residents. There are no official cloakrooms or luggage storage facilities inside Bukchon Hanok Village itself. In the designated Red Zone, tourist visits are restricted to between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with no access outside those hours. The Red Zone includes the residential alleys along Bukchon-ro 11-gil. Visiting outside the permitted hours in the Red Zone can result in a fine of ₩100,000. Getting to Bukchon with luggage

Anguk Station on Seoul Metro Line 3 is the gentlest approach, with lift access from the platform to the surface at Exit 2, which helps if you're moving a suitcase. The subway from Seoul Station to Anguk on Line 1 then Line 3 costs ₩1,550. Several city bus routes — 109, 151, 162, 171 and 272 — stop within walking distance of the village. With anything wheeled, the subway is the easier choice, thanks to Anguk's lift.

Nearby attractions and moving around the area

Gyeongbokgung Palace is a 15- to 20-minute walk from Bukchon Hanok Village. The palace is served by Gyeongbokgung Station on Line 3 (Exit 5, 5-minute walk) and Gwanghwamun Station on Line 5 (Exit 2, 10-minute walk). It closes every Tuesday and charges ₩3,000 for adults aged 19 to 64, so factor that into which day you go.

Samcheongdong sits adjacent to Bukchon and is reached by walking down from the village's south side. The main alleys are maintained for wheelchair users, though the village sits on a hill and is mostly uphill, so wheeled luggage and wheelchairs both need extra effort. The Bukchon Traditional Culture Centre at the south approach offers a step-free exhibition area and an accessible toilet for visitors.
