Bag restrictions and on-site cloakrooms

Budapest Buda Castle museum exhibitions require bag screening at every entrance, and security staff may inspect bag contents. Backpacks and bags larger than approximately 30x40x20 cm, including cabin-size bags, must go into the free on-site cloakroom. Suitcases are not accepted by the Buda Castle museum facilities at all, so they must be stored off-site rather than placed in the cloakroom.

St Stephen’s Hall also requires cloakroom use for security reasons.

Stasher has storage near Budapest Buda Castle, outside the castle itself, with no bag size or weight limits. This covers suitcases and other oversized bags rejected on site. A spot is booked online with a trusted local shop or hotel, or through a self-service smart locker.

Museum hours, funicular times, and free outdoor access

The Buda Castle Funicular operates daily from 08:00 to 22:00, so a descent and bag collection need to fit within those operating hours. Tickets are sold until 21:50. Museum last admission is 17:30 in summer and 15:30 in winter, one hour before closing. The outdoor courtyards and gardens of Buda Castle are open to the public 24 hours a day, every day, free of charge. This makes the museum cut-off stricter than access to the outdoor areas.

Walking routes and public transit to the Castle District

The walk to the Buda Castle District takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the starting point. The lower Buda Castle Funicular station is at Clark Ádám tér, served by buses 16 and 105 and trams 19 and 41. The upper station is on Szent György tér, with buses 16, 16A and 116 approaching it. Check the station name and square carefully, as the lower and upper funicular stations have different transit connections.
