The Acropolis Museum: bag rules and cloakrooms

If you're visiting the Acropolis Museum too, Akropoli station on Line 2 serves it. Unlike the archaeological site, the museum does provide storage for visitors: two cloakrooms on its ground floor take backpacks and other bulky items, and visitors are required to leave large bags there before entering the galleries. So the museum cloakrooms can hold what the archaeological site's own cloakroom will not, though you'll still need to manage the walk up the hill without your larger bag.

Getting to and around the Acropolis with luggage

Akropoli station on Athens Metro Line 2 is the nearest metro stop to the Acropolis, about an 8-minute walk from the archaeological site entrance, and the walk follows Dionysiou Areopagitou, the broad pedestrian promenade that wraps around the south and west flanks of the hill. Thiseio station on the M1 Green Line is a second option, with a 15- to 20-minute walk to the main entrance. Both routes are pedestrian-friendly, but neither station has luggage storage, so arrive with only what you are willing to carry uphill. One more practical note: the elevator at the archaeological site is out of order as of mid-October 2026, which matters if you have a stroller or a small bag on wheels.

Planning your visit

The Acropolis archaeological site is open daily, with winter hours from 08:00 to 17:00 (last entrance 16:30) and summer hours from 08:00 to 20:00 (last entrance 19:30). The later summer closing means plenty of visitors combine the site with an evening walk along Dionysiou Areopagitou toward Syntagma, which is worth keeping in mind when you decide where to leave a bag for the day.
