Getting around Munich with luggage

The S1 and S8 link the airport to both the Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz in roughly 40 to 45 minutes, so you can reach the centre directly with bags in tow. Items larger than 80 x 90 cm or heavier than 25 kg are not permitted on the network, though exceptions may be made at the discretion of staff. On MVG services, your bags must be stowed safely and kept clear of doors and aisles, so keep any bulky suitcase out of the way.

Marienplatz itself is the heart of Munich, about a 12- to 15-minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof, and its station sits directly beneath the square with U3, U6, and all the central S-Bahn lines running through. Karlsplatz is roughly a 10- to 15-minute walk from Marienplatz. Theresienwiese has its own U4/U5 stop, with Schwanthalerhöhe, Goetheplatz, Poccistraße, and Hackerbrücke nearby.

Museums and sights: bag rules and restrictions

The Jüdisches Museum München turns away suitcases, travelling bags, and trekking rucksacks outright. At Haus der Kunst, anything over 33 x 23 x 10 cm has to stay out of the exhibition spaces, so keep your bag within those dimensions. Kunsthalle München bars bags larger than DIN A4 and backpacks from the exhibitions, directing them to the coat check or lockers instead.

The Deutsches Museum prohibits backpacks and bags larger than A4 in its exhibitions, except the Kids' Kingdom, so leave the rucksack behind before exploring. The Bayerisches Nationalmuseum requires bags larger than its measuring device to be deposited in the lockers at the entrance.

Event venues and festivals

Olympiapark is a major leisure and event centre, hosting concerts and sports in the Olympiastadion and Olympiahalle, though the Olympiaturm itself is closed for renovation until 2027. Theresienwiese, home to the annual Oktoberfest, is the other major venue to plan around.

Oktoberfest visitors are not allowed to bring large bags or backpacks; bags must have a maximum volume of 3 litres and be no larger than 20 x 15 x 10 centimetres. Theresienwiese is served by the Theresienwiese subway station (lines U4/U5) and is a 15-minute walk from München Hauptbahnhof.

For football at the Allianz Arena, take the U6 to Fröttmaning and allow 15 to 20 minutes for the walk to the stadium. The Tollwood Winter Festival returns to Theresienwiese from November 24 to December 23, 2026, bringing the same bag restrictions into play for its market stalls and performances.
