    About Tampa International Airport

Tampa International Airport (TPA) is one of the busiest airports in Florida and a long-standing favourite of frequent flyers across the United States. Opened in its current configuration in 1971, the airport pioneered the hub-and-spoke design with its central landside terminal connected to four satellite airside terminals (A, C, E, and F) by automated people movers — a model still admired in airport-design circles more than half a century on. TPA now handles in excess of 20 million passengers each year and consistently ranks among the top ten US airports for passenger experience.

The airport sits roughly six miles west of downtown Tampa, in the Westshore business district. Direct access via I-275 keeps the trip into the city short, and the cruise terminals at Port Tampa Bay sit a further fifteen minutes south-east — making TPA one of the simplest cruise-and-fly combinations in the south-eastern United States. For visitors, the airport is often the first introduction to Florida's Gulf Coast: warm air on the jetway, open-air people movers, the famous Tampa-themed Public Art Program scattered through the terminals, and an on-airport rental car centre that has become a model for the industry.

Is there luggage storage at Tampa Airport?

Tampa International Airport do0es not currently operate a permanent left-luggage facility. The Smarte Carte lockers that once served the terminals have been phased out across most US airports, TPA included. The result is that travellers landing at Tampa with hours to fill before a hotel check-in, a cruise embarkation, or an onward connection are often left without an obvious place to leave their bags.

Stasher solves the problem by connecting travellers with a network of vetted hotels and businesses around the airport, in Westshore, and across downtown Tampa. Storage is bookable in advance and runs at a flat daily rate per bag. Key benefits of using Stasher near Tampa Airport include:

    • Guaranteed availability — book your space online before you arrive, with no risk of finding storage closed or full.
    • Affordable daily rates — Stasher pricing near TPA starts from $5.95 per bag per day, well below the cost of booking an airport day-room for storage.
    • Flexible hours — many partner locations open early and close late, with several running 24/7 to cover red-eye arrivals and late-night departures.
    • Insurance included — every bag stored through Stasher is covered against loss or damage.
    • No size surcharges — the flat daily fee covers all bag sizes, including oversized cases, cruise luggage, and golf bags.

For cruise passengers, beach-bound holidaymakers, and business travellers heading into the Westshore business district, Stasher gives you a cheaper, more reliable, and fully bookable alternative right on the doorstep of the airport.

Convenience and Accessibility: Most partners near the airport operate flexible hours that align with TPA's busiest periods, particularly around early-morning Southwest departures and the late-evening flights from the western hubs. You can book in seconds through the Stasher app or website — search by date and time, choose a location, pay online, and show your confirmation when you drop off. It takes less than two minutes.

Price: Daily rates start from $5.95 per bag, considerably cheaper than booking a day-room at one of the airport hotels just to use the lobby for storage. There are no hidden charges for oversized items, and discounts are available for extended bookings or large groups.

What to Do and See Near Tampa Airport

Once your bags are stored with a nearby Stashpoint, Tampa's main attractions are easy to reach by rental car, rideshare, or HART bus. A few highlights within easy range of TPA:

Tampa Riverwalk: The 2.6-mile pedestrian path along the Hillsborough River links Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Florida Aquarium, and the recently developed Water Street district. Easily walked end to end in an afternoon.

Ybor City: Tampa's historic Cuban quarter, founded by cigar makers in the 1880s. Brick streets, wrought-iron balconies, the original Columbia Restaurant from 1905, and a free streetcar — the TECO Line — connecting it back to downtown.

Busch Gardens: The major theme park north of the city, combining safari-style animal exhibits with some of the more serious roller coasters in the United States. A full-day attraction if you have the time.

Florida Aquarium and ZooTampa: Two well-regarded family attractions within easy reach of downtown, both close to the cruise port.

Henry B. Plant Museum: The Moorish-revival former Tampa Bay Hotel on the University of Tampa campus, dating to 1891 and one of the most distinctive buildings in Florida.

Bayshore Boulevard: Officially the longest continuous sidewalk in the world at 4.5 miles, running along Hillsborough Bay with the downtown skyline spread across the water.

For those venturing further afield, the Gulf beaches at Clearwater, St. Pete Beach, and Pass-a-Grille are all within an hour by car — some of the best white-sand beaches in the United States.

    Upcoming Events Near Tampa

Tampa's events calendar runs full across the year, with several weeks each year filling hotels, flights, and storage capacity well above the seasonal average. If you are planning a trip to Tampa around any of the events below, book your Stashpoint in advance.

Gasparilla Pirate Festival — late January. Tampa's flagship event, with a full-scale pirate ship sailing up Hillsborough Bay and a parade along Bayshore Boulevard. Around 300,000 attendees, with associated events running across the whole month.

Outback Bowl — January 1. The annual college football bowl game at Raymond James Stadium, drawing fans from across the Big Ten and SEC each new year's day.

Florida State Fair — February. Two weeks of agricultural shows, concerts, and rides at the Florida State Fairgrounds east of the city.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers home games — September through January. The NFL season at Raymond James Stadium, with major fixtures pulling visitors from across Florida and the south-east.

Tampa Bay Lightning home games — October through April. Amalie Arena in downtown Tampa for the NHL season, with playoff weeks particularly busy.

Tampa Bay Rays home games — April through September. Played at Tropicana Field across the bay in St. Petersburg, with a steady stream of fans crossing over from Tampa.

Cruise turnaround days — year-round. The Saturday and Sunday turnarounds at Port Tampa Bay see thousands of passengers cycle through the city between flights and ships. Storage demand spikes sharply on these days.

Major Transit Hubs Near Tampa Airport

Tampa International sits at the centre of one of the better-connected travel networks in Florida.

Port Tampa Bay is the cruise terminal at Channelside, about 15 minutes south-east of the airport. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Holland America all run regular departures from Tampa, and the fly-and-cruise combination is one of the most common reasons travellers come through TPA. Stasher covers the area between the airport and the cruise terminals.

Tampa Union Station is the historic Amtrak terminal in downtown Tampa, served by the Silver Star route between New York and Miami. About 20 minutes from the airport by rideshare.

HART buses and the TECO Line streetcar cover most of the local public transit routes between the airport, downtown, and Ybor City. The TECO Line is the most tourist-facing service, running between downtown and Ybor for a flat fare.

St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) sits across the bay, mainly used by Allegiant Air for domestic routes. Useful for travellers with flexibility on which Tampa-area airport they use.

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is around 90 minutes east by car, with a broader long-haul international route network. Some travellers fly into Tampa and out of Orlando — or vice versa — as part of a wider Florida itinerary.

Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) is about an hour south, useful for travellers heading directly to the southern Gulf Coast around Siesta Key and Anna Maria Island.
