Luggage storage in Lisbon: what's available

Arriving and getting around with luggage

To reach Rossio Station, take the Red line to São Sebastião and change to the Blue line. Metropolitano de Lisboa permits large items on board as long as they don't compromise other passengers' safety or comfort, and special access gates are available for bulky luggage and strollers.

Carris buses allow hand luggage free of charge, but they apply a strict size limit of 50x40x20cm and drivers may refuse larger bags.

The Metro runs from 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. daily, so early and late travellers should plan around it. For rail journeys, Santa Apolónia is the historic terminus for long-distance services to Porto and some international routes. Rossio serves the Sintra line, while Cais do Sodré handles the Cascais line to Estoril and Cascais. Alameda Subway Station serves both the Green and Red lines of the Metro.

Bag rules at attractions and venues

At Museu Arqueológico do Carmo, large or wheeled suitcases that cannot be carried must be left at reception. MAAT prohibits items larger than 32 by 41 cm, excluding baby bags, and has lockers for visitors. Clérigos Museum and Tower also bars backpacks, trolleys and bags, providing secure storage instead.

There is no cloakroom or locker facility provided at the Elevador de Santa Justa. Altice Arena offers a cloakroom for €2 per piece.

Belém Tower is reached via the Cascais line from Cais do Sodré, a 7-minute ride to Belém followed by a 10-to-15-minute walk west along the waterfront. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, with last entry at 5:00 pm, and entry costs €15 per adult, with timed-entry tickets required because the daily cap is 900 visitors.

Medeiros e Almeida Museum prohibits backpacks, bags, and umbrellas, but provides a free cloakroom at reception.

Planning around closures and events

The National Museum of the Azulejo is currently closed for renovation works under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, so check before setting out with bags in tow. It sits in the former Madre de Deus Convent and is served by bus lines 718, 742, 794 and 759, about a 20-minute journey from Santa Apolónia station via connecting buses.

The LEFFEST – Lisboa Film Festival runs from 6 to 15 November 2026, which will draw crowds to venues across the city. The Oceanário de Lisboa, a major aquarium holding 5 million litres of seawater, is a few minutes on foot from Oriente Station. Lisbon City Centre, or Baixa, is the flat 18th-century grid of streets around Praça do Comércio and Rossio, the main shopping and tourist district.

The Jerónimos Monastery cloister is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 to 17:30, with last entry at 17:00, and is closed on Mondays and certain holidays.
