Arriving and leaving Athens with luggage

From the airport, Metro Line 3 reaches Syntagma in roughly 40 minutes for a €9 one-way fare, while the X95 express bus takes closer to an hour at €5.50. For the port of Piraeus, the X96 express bus connects to the airport with an estimated 90-minute ride. If you arrive by suburban rail, Larissis Station links to the airport in about 45 minutes. On city transport, OASA rules allow larger baggage up to 100 x 60 x 25 cm and 25 kg, so it’s worth checking your bag against those limits. Passengers with baggage or pushchairs must use the wide gates for disabled passengers at metro stations, so head for those when carrying luggage.

Exploring Athens with bags

The Acropolis Museum uses an X-ray scanner at the entrance for security checks and recommends leaving large bags or backpacks behind. Giorgos Karaiskakis Stadium, home of Olympiacos in Piraeus, bans backpacks and bags over 25 x 25 x 25 cm from entering. The Floating Naval Museum Battleship Georgios Averof is stricter still — only small handbags get through, with no storage provided, so large bags and backpacks have to stay elsewhere. The Olympiacos Museum draws its line at 40 x 40 x 50 cm or 8 kg.

Monastiraki sits where Metro Lines 1 and 3 meet, making it a useful hub if you’re hopping between sights with a bag in tow. Syntagma Station is on both Line 2 (red) and Line 3 (blue), with its exit leading directly onto the square in under a minute.
