Luggage storage at İstanbul's airports

Bag rules at popular sights

Hagia Sophia restricts bags: large bags aren't permitted inside, and the site has no cloakroom or luggage storage of its own. Dolmabahçe Palace takes the opposite approach, letting you bring small bags and handbags while requiring large bags, backpacks, and luggage to go into a free cloakroom near the entrance.

Getting around İstanbul with luggage

Passengers can bring one large suitcase plus either one cabin-sized suitcase or one small/medium backpack for free, provided they stay within weight and size limits, though an extra-large item technically requires a second fare. Weight and size matter on the metro too, since anything over 30 kg or larger than 120x60x50 cm can't be brought onto a vehicle. If you do travel with more than one piece, it's allowed outside peak hours of 07:00-09:00 and 17:00-20:00, but each excess load costs an extra travel fee. The M11 metro from iGA İstanbul Airport to Gayrettepe takes about 30 minutes and costs TRY 42 one-way, making it an option for getting into the city with a suitcase. From Sabiha Gökçen, the M4 line reaches Kadıköy in roughly an hour. In the Sultanahmet district, the T1 tram stops a 3-minute walk from Hagia Sophia's tourist entrance, and Taksim Square connects to the same line via a funicular from Kabataş.
