The city inaugurated the Museum of Pilgrimage in 1951 to showcase the evolution of Santiago de Compostela and educate the public about the Way of Saint James pilgrimage.

A fine example of Gothic architecture, the museum building was constructed in the mid-14th century. However, you won’t be able to enter if you’re carrying any oversized bags.

Contemporary Art Center of Galacia

The Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea is an admission-free museum celebrating contemporary Galician artists. Apart from its permanent collection, the museum also hosts traveling exhibitions, performance art, and educational workshops.

The museum prohibits entry for anyone carrying objects larger than 30 cm x 30 cm.

Museo do Pobo Galego

Inaugurated in 1976, the Museo do Pobo Galego celebrates local Galician culture. Apart from its permanent collection and extensive library, the museum also serves as a research facility and offers educational opportunities and internships.

Visitors with oversized backpacks or luggage will not be permitted to enter the museum.

Museo Casa de la Troya

The Casa de la Troya was initially built as student housing in 1886, and the house was immortalized in a popular novela by author Alejandro Pérez Lugín. After years of disrepair, the house was lovingly renovated in the 1990s. Details include lovingly recreated furniture and decorative details that give visitors a glimpse into what Galician student life was like in the 19th century.

Santiago de Compostela Cathedral

The majestic Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela hails from the Early Romanesque period (around 1075) and houses the remains of Saint James. UNESCO counts the cathedral among its World Heritage Sites.

Visitors enter through the elaborate Portico de la Gloria, designed by Master Mateo, which includes over 200 sculptures depicting the story of the Apocalypse. The main attraction is the Baroque-style Crypt of Saint James, which contains the Saint's tomb and remains.

However, please keep in mind that the high pilgrimage season is August and September. Thousands of pilgrims flood the city, and the Cathedral can get rather crowded.

The post office across from the Cathedral offers limited luggage storage and will send your bags to your final destination if you choose to walk the Camino.

Plaza de la Immaculada

Located between the Monastery of San Martino Pinario and the Cathedral’s jet-stone facade, the Plaza de la Immaculada represents the end of the trail for the Camino de Santiago. Although founded in the 10th century, the monastery now includes an impressive Baroque-style facade that was completed in 1738. The Cathedral’s northern side faces into the Plaza and depicts scenes from the story of Adam and Eve.

Plaza de Cervantes

The Plaza de Cervantes became an important meeting place in the 12th century when the town crier read proclamations from the archbishop and municipal authorities to the public, who were mostly illiterate. Visitors will find a host of historic buildings in the square, including a town hall from 1682 that remains the only Baroque-style municipal building in Santiago. In the 19th century, the plaza was renamed in honor of the author of the literary masterpiece Don Quixote.

Plaza de las Platerias

The centerpiece of the Plaza de las Platerias is the Casa del Cabildo, considered one of the most elaborate examples of Galicia’s Baroque architecture. Built for local aristocrats in 1758, the Casa del Cabildo includes an ornate central fountain.
