Piraeus is Athens' primary port and the city's gateway to the Aegean islands. With roughly 20 million passengers coming through each year, it is Greece's largest and busiest port. The Saronic islands, the Cyclades, Crete, the Dodecanese, and the North Aegean islands all have daily ferry connections from Piraeus.
Furthermore, it serves as a hub for many cruise ships from throughout the world. It features 10 gates, each of which serves a particular purpose. Because the ferry port in Piraeus is so large, make sure to know from which gate the ship to your destination departs.
Note that every 20 minutes, a free shuttle bus connects the E7 entrance to the E3, E2, and E1 gates. The terminal stop is located at the E7 gate, just across from the Train Station.
Getting to the Port of Piraeus from Athens city center or from the Athens International Airport can be done in different ways. You can get the subway, the Airport Express bus line, or the Athens Suburban Railway. Note that the fastest way to get to the Port is by taking the Airport Express Bus Line X96.
Keep in mind that there are no size and weight limits for your luggage. You can store as many items as you want without worrying about restrictions!
If you have free time available you can take the train from Piraeus and get to the center of Athens. The route takes approximately 15 minutes from Piraeus to Monastiraki Train Station. Within the Athens metropolitan region, Piraeus is one of Greece's largest cities. The city is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) southwest of Athens' city center and is one of the Mediterranean's most important commercial seaports. The city is located to the west of the Piraeus peninsula, with private harbors such as the Mikrolimano (Tourkolimano) and the Zea Marina to the east (Pasalimani). An operational train and metro network connects the city to Athens, terminating at Akti Kalimassioti.
The issue about Piraeus is that if you take the wrong path, you'll find a lot of unkempt sidewalks and buildings. Contemporary structures don't appear to be as modern as they once did. Piraeus, on the other hand, has a lot of potential. The scenery can be breathtaking because its historic districts and locals have their own distinct character.
There are some beautiful sites and secret historic corners worth seeing between the smaller harbors packed with sailboats and small fishing boats; down its busy center streets adorned with glass-paneled buildings, and along the shoreline overlooking the neighborhoods. People frequent the city's less-known neighborhoods at night, where music bars with dark lighting serve cool drinks that fit every traveler’s mood.
