Arriving by air or rail with luggage

The fastest public transport from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport into the city centre is Capital Metro Route 20, which takes roughly 35 minutes and runs every 15–30 minutes, seven days a week, with a one-way fare of $1.25.

Route 20 is the direct link between the airport and downtown, so if you're landing early with hours before check-in, it's a cheap way to get your bags into the city before sorting storage. Capital MetroRail's Red Line runs commuter rail between downtown and Leander across ten stations, useful if you're arriving from the northern suburbs with luggage. The State Capitol complex sits about 1.2 miles northeast of the Amtrak station, close enough that you might want to drop a bag before walking over.

Bag rules at Austin's museums and venues

The Blanton Museum of Art requires bags larger than 11 x 15 inches to go into free lockers at check-in before you enter the galleries.

The Bullock Texas State History Museum prohibits suitcases and bags or backpacks over 12 x 12 x 12 inches in the galleries, and the museum doesn't provide lockers or storage, so if you're heading there with more than a small bag, plan where to leave it before your visit.

The Texas Science & Natural History Museum asks visitors to stow large bags, backpacks, and oversized items in free lockers near the admissions desk. At the LBJ Presidential Library, there's a complimentary bag check on the 3rd floor, and large bags and backpacks must be left there.

Immersive Van Gogh Austin bans backpacks and duffel bags in the exhibit and charges a fee to check them at the coat check, so it's worth planning where to leave them beforehand. Texas Performing Arts says all bags are subject to search, and large purses, backpacks, or luggage are prohibited, so it's worth arranging somewhere to leave larger bags before a show.

Getting around the city with luggage

Capital Metro buses all have lift or low-floor ramp access, and rail vehicle entrances sit level with station platforms, so boarding with bags is easier.

On Capital Metro Access paratransit, you're limited to four bags with a combined weight of no more than 20 pounds, and items must have handles for the operator to hold. The Austin Convention Center is in downtown Austin, and the Capital MetroRail Red Line connects to a station right in front of it, which is handy if you're arriving by rail for an event. If you're heading to the University of Texas or the State Capitol complex, the MLK Jr. MetroRail Station is the main stop serving both.
