About Staples Center
Staples Center (or STAPLES Center, as it is officially called) is a 950,000 square feet (89,000 square meters) versatile arena in Downtown Los Angeles. It stands 150 feet (45 meters) tall and is located right next to the Los Angeles Convention Center complex. As of 2019, the arena seats about 19,000 basketball spectators, 18,000 hockey spectators and 20,000 people visiting for concerts or other events. There are also 10 luxury suites spread on three levels.
The arena first opened its gates on October 17, 1999, and it’s home to several local NHL, NBA, WNBA and AFL teams. Some of the most famous tenants of the Staples Center include:
- LA Lakers
- LA Clippers
- LA Kings (NHL)
- LA Sparks (WNBA)
Fun fact: Staples Center is the only arena in the USA shared by two NBA teams, as well as one of two sports venues to host two teams from the same division.
The arena hosts over 250 events per year, seeing an annual influx of about 4 million guests. Staples Center is the venue of the 17 of the last 19 Grammy Awards shows, as well as four WTA Tour Championships. Furthermore, the arena has been marked with the performances of some of the greatest artists of the last 150 years, such as Paul McCartney, Van Halen, Christina Aguilera, The Rolling Stones, Prince and countless others.
Staples Center Bag Policy
If you want to attend an event in Staples Center, you might want to think twice about bringing any kind of bag with you. Per the Staples Center and NBA policy, any bag larger than 14”x14”x6” (35x35x12cm) will be prohibited from entry into the arena. Exceptions can be made for guests with special medical needs or infant bags.
Here is a list of other prohibited items:
- Weapons of any type or kind.
- Laser pointers, flashlights, handcuffs, fireworks, alcohol, drugs, and/or illegal substances.
- Food and beverage purchased outside the arena.
- Professional photography equipment.
- Signs/flags/banners/posters larger than 11”x 17”, mobility devices and other oversized equipment.
Although pets and massagers are a pretty sensible no-go for a crowded venue, some of the restrictions can be quite limiting. For reference, a regular laptop backpack is about 17-18” (45-50cm) tall, so if you want to visit Staples Center without stopping at home, you might run into a bit of a problem. Unless you can fit all of your items inside a purse, you might want to explore the possibility of storing your luggage near Staples Center.
WARNING: As you might have noticed, there is a slight discrepancy between the reported bag allowance inside the arena. The Staples Center FAQ section states that the limit is 14”x14”x6”. However, the guidelines for entry, suggest that 10”x10” is the maximum. In any case, it makes sense to eliminate the guesswork and store your luggage before entering Staples Center.
