Quick London Guides: Things to Do in Marylebone

You’re probably thinking of a deerstalker hat and a magnifying glass right now. And we can’t really blame you. The home of Holmes has been attracting tourists for decades, but there’s more to this district than meets the eye. From hidden rivers to historic bookstores and everything in between, Baker Street has plenty to keep you occupied for hours.

Slightly off the beaten track, nearby Marylebone is another charming part of North London, and not without its fair share of great shops and famous residents. Calm, leafy and a stones’ throw from Baker Street, Marylebone is a great way to escape from the sights and sounds of its noisier neighbour, and has just as much to offer the tourist in a hurry.

Marylebone or Baker Street? Baker Street or Marylebone? Don’t worry, we’ve got StashPoints within easy walking distance of both. In fact, with Stasher, you can find luggage storage anywhere in London!

Things to Do in Marylebone and Baker Street

First things first — let’s address the elephant in the room. Sherlock Holmes is synonymous with Baker Street, and the Museum, founded in 1989, is a must-see attraction. Although it is actually situated at number 239, a long legal battle has seen the Museum win the right to claim the notorious 221B Baker Street address as its own. Painstaking effort has gone in to ensuring Holmes fans can enjoy the most authentic experience possible, with various waxork models, murder weapons and trinkets on display. It is said that many tourists find it hard to believe that it isn’t the real home of the legendary detective!

Away from the hustle and bustle, Marylebone High Street is a great place to indulge some retail therapy. Daunt Books is a stunning Edwardian bookshop with an antique interior that will leave you feeling like you’ve stepped into a time machine. Further down the road, expect cute little chocolatiers, upmarket delis and niche fashion outlets, and an amazing Farmers’ Market every Sunday.

For the super sleuths amongst you, why not set out to find London’s lost river? We all know about the Thames, but mention the River Tyburn and even the most seasoned of Londoners is bound to look confused. While it may not be as large or impressive as its better-known rival, traces of this underground brook can be found in various places in the area, and make for an interesting walk.

Grays Antiques Centre claims that part of the river flows through an open conduit in its basement — now home to some lovely exotic fish. Definitely not something you see every day!

Places to Eat in Marylebone

For the carnivores, you can’t really get much better than Meat Liquor. The gritty, cavernous Deep South-inspired interior is well complimented by the juiciest beef patties and crispiest chicken wings in town.

As far as value for money is concerned, you’re onto a winner with this place. If you’re feeling especially brave, try out the Triple Chilli Challenge — where for £25 you can bag yourself a free meal if you manage to wolf down the jalapeno-drenched set menu in under ten minutes (CityStasher takes no personal responsibility for the consequences of attempting the aforementioned challenge). Rumour has it CityStasher’s own Anthony is a Chilli Challenge Champion with a sub 9 minute time…

Far from being a new cod on the block (sorry…), The Golden Hind has a century-long record of serving hungry Londoners that most treasured of English dishes — fish and chips. It’s difficult to find fresh and flakey battered beauties in the capital that can rival seaside restaurants, but The Hind does an excellent job. Simple, traditional, no fuss and no frills — this little chippy focuses sole-ly (sorry again…) on the food and the service.

Pubs in Marylebone

Amidst the ever-changing landscape of the capital, The Golden Eagle feels like a place frozen in time. Cosy, no-frills and brimming with charm, the pub often has a few guest ales on tap that should satisfy the needs of beer connoisseurs.

Purl was one of the earliest speakeasy-style establishments to open in London, and has proved popular ever since. Although you have to book in advance for this one, it’s not too difficult to secure a table, and the ambiance is certainly worth it. Enjoy the well-furnished surroundings, the delicious cocktails and excellent jazz playlists.

Stasher Recommendations

If you’ve got a passion for Pecorino or a craving for Camembert, then Matt recommends La Fromagerie, a real contender for the best cheese board in London, and maybe the world (sorry France).

One of the most popular foodie spots in Marylebone, as well as the expected array of amazing cheeses, La Fromagerie offers charcuteries, cake and everything in between.
