Bag Policy at Stadio Olimpico – Rome

Stadio Olimpico is one of Italy’s most iconic sporting venues, home to AS Roma, SS Lazio, the Italian national football team and major international rugby fixtures. It also hosts concerts, ceremonies and large-scale entertainment events throughout the year. Located within the Foro Italico complex, the stadium regularly welcomes crowds of 60,000+, making clear and efficient security procedures essential — especially when it comes to bags.

Arriving at Stadio Olimpico

The stadium is located in the northern part of Rome, close to the River Tiber. Visitors typically arrive via tram to Mancini or a combination of metro and bus services. On match days, the entire area fills early, with long walking routes, police checkpoints and controlled access zones around the stadium. Bringing only essential items makes navigating these checkpoints far easier.

Because of the crowds, it’s common to walk 10–20 minutes from transport hubs to reach the stadium gates. Large bags quickly become uncomfortable, and security personnel will often prevent oversized luggage from entering the controlled perimeter.

Stadio Olimpico bag policy

Security rules at Stadio Olimpico are stringent and enforced across all events. The main guidelines include:

  • Small bags only: Only compact bags, handbags and small daypacks are normally permitted. They must be easy to open for inspection and of a size that fits comfortably under your seat.
  • No large bags or suitcases: Backpacks, travel bags, large rucksacks, duffel bags and all suitcases are prohibited inside the stadium.
  • No official luggage storage: Stadio Olimpico does not provide a cloakroom or luggage storage service of any kind. Arriving with oversized bags will almost certainly result in being refused entry.
  • Mandatory security checks: Bag inspections, body checks and turnstile screening are standard. On high-alert match days, additional screening stages may apply.
  • Event-specific restrictions: High-profile football matches, derbies and international fixtures may impose even stricter bag rules, so always review your ticket information.

The combination of controlled access zones, long approach routes and strict bag limits makes it essential to avoid bringing unnecessary items.

If you are travelling with luggage

Many visitors come directly from Rome Termini, Tiburtina or the airport before heading to a match or concert. Likewise, those checking out of accommodation earlier in the day often still have their luggage with them. Because the stadium has no storage facilities at all and prohibits large bags inside the perimeter, arriving with a suitcase is not practical.

The best approach is to store any larger items in central Rome before travelling to Foro Italico for the event. This avoids delays at police checkpoints and ensures you can move freely on the long walking routes toward the turnstiles.

Using a nearby stashpoint before entering the stadium

Stasher provides multiple luggage storage options around Rome, these stashpoints offer secure storage for suitcases, large backpacks and travel bags, and several are positioned within easy reach of transport routes leading toward the stadium. All bookings and payments are made online, and some locations may have different pricing depending on the size of the bag you store.

What type of bag should you bring?

  • A small cross-body bag or compact daypack containing essentials: phone, tickets, ID, wallet and medications.
  • Avoid hard-shell bags, bulky rucksacks or anything that won’t fit under your seat.
  • On football match days, expect to hold your bag up for visual inspection multiple times when moving through the outer security rings.
  • Families should divide belongings between adults to avoid bulky shared bags.

Additional tips for event-goers

  • Arrive early — Stadio Olimpico has several outer checkpoints and the route from transport stops can be long.
  • Carry only essentials to speed up security at each gate.
  • Plan your route in advance: tram, bus and walking routes vary depending on match-day restrictions.
  • Check official guidance closer to the event, especially for derbies or international fixtures, when rules may tighten.

Stadio Olimpico operates a strict small-bag-only policy and does not provide any form of luggage storage on-site. Large bags, backpacks and suitcases are not permitted, and multiple security checkpoints around the venue make oversized bags impractical even outside the gates. To enjoy a smooth arrival, store your luggage in Rome before travelling to the stadium, then carry only the essentials needed for the match or event.
